Originally hailing from the steel city of Pittsburgh, Rachel Piplica moved to Los Angeles in 2004 to study Fashion Design at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. Not even a month in the city, Rachel was introduced to the Los Angeles Derby Dolls, LA’s premiere women’s banked track roller derby. Walking out of her first practice with a bruised hand and sore butt, Rachel was instantly hooked and soon adopted the name Iron Maiven.

With her design expertise, she became head the league’s uniform committee and began helping each home team with the creation of their uniforms. Traveling within the USA she realized the uniform needs of roller girls and referees extended far beyond her own league. Skaters expressed that they wanted something athletic yet sexy, comfortable, durable, and most importantly, skate-able. Something that catered to all body shapes and sizes and offered in a wide range of colors. To meet those demands, Iron Doll Clothing was born.

With seven years, six Rollercons, and three league championships for her team the Tough Cookies under her wheels, Iron Maiven understands implicitly what rollergirls need from their active wear. Before introducing new designs and materials, Maiven is in the unique position of not only relying on her team of on-skates prototype testers, but of being able to test her designs first hand. And where Iron Doll uniforms travel, you'll often find Maiven in the audience cheering for the teams that fill them out. Because, for Iron Maiven, Iron Doll is not just her business, it is a way to live and breathe the sport and community she fell in love with. And what rollergirl doesn't dream of the same?

From its location near downtown Los Angeles, Iron Doll's production facilities have access to not only the best producers of athletic materials in the country, but also to the most skilled professional athletic apparel seamstresses. Iron Maiven has personally vetted the industry for only the most durable, breathable, and versatile materials that can work as hard as the skaters who will wear them. After development, Maiven is committed to rigorous on-the-track testing of each of her designs. Only after dozens of bruises, scrapes, Velcro snags, and really gratifying take-downs is she satisfied with the success of her products. As a result, your uniforms come to you with their designs completely battle-tested and approved.

If there's one thing that Iron Maiven has learned in her derby tenure, it's that there is no such thing as a typical rollergirl. Even if the media likes to think of us as tattooed punks, Iron Doll is well aware that rollergirls and guys actually span the whole scale from conservative to wild and delicate to formidable. The company's unique approach to uniforms began with Maiven's own experience trying to please her own team full of strong personalities and varying styles.
